Autism Awareness, half day training for anyone delivering services to children and young people 0n 14 March at Norton Hall, Saltley

Paediatric First Aid, blended online training provided by Train Aid with 1 day practical session on 10 April at Hamstead Hall, Handsworth Wood

Safeguarding Level 2 and 3 online and Child Sexual Exploitation Level 2 online – courses provided by Caredemy and including a follow-up session by Zoom after Easter

Food Hygiene and Safety Level 2 and 3 online and free Allergen Awareness course online at Food Standards Agency

Online Level 1 courses available for evaluation in: Behaviours That Challenge; Child Sexual Exploitation; Diabetes in Children; Effective Communication; Epilepsy Awareness; Nutrition and Healthy Eating; and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Autism Awareness – Norton Hall Friday 14 March 10am – 2pm

A half-day introduction with trainers from Resources for Autism which gives participants:

  • an understanding of what autism is and how it can impact daily life
  • increased confidence in working, communicating and interacting with autistic people
  • ideas of have to implement autism specific strategies into daily practice.

The course is free for CQ members and costs £25 for others. See Childrens Quarter for details.

Paediatric First Aid – Hamstead Hall Academy Thursday 10 April 10am-4.30pm

This is Level 3 Paediatric First Aid (12 Hour) which will be taught over one classroom day (6 hours), with the additional time completed through an e-learning module (6 hours).

The course meets the requirements of Ofsted & the EYFS. It is suitable for childcare workers who may need to come to the assistance of a sick or injured child in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

Cost for CQ members will be £49.50 including lunch – which is less than half price.

Safeguarding Courses – are available at Level 2 and Level 3 online:

Level 2 Safeguarding is a two hour CPD-accredited course which has been tested by Childrens Quarter participants and found to be useful and relevant. It gives learners an overview of safeguarding and the role health and social care workers play in working with and identifying vulnerable children.  This course provides an understanding of safeguarding for those who work with children on a regular basis.  It is aimed at teachers, people who work in health or social care, people who work in youth justice or in counselling and others. At the end of the Level 2 course, learners should be able to:

  • Identify risk factors that make children vulnerable to abuse
  • Understand thresholds including how and when risk escalates
  • Understand the impact of early intervention in the prevention of child maltreatment
  • Identify different ways you can be an effective advocate for children
  • Understand when and how to refer a child
  • Explain steps to take when making a safeguarding or child protection referral
  • Know how to document concerns in an appropriate manner
  • Describe how multi-agency teams work together to safeguard children.

Learners receive a certificate after successfully completing an end of course quiz. There will be a follow-up session by Zoom for participants which will look at applying safeguarding principles in practice. Book places on the Level 2 course above.

Level 3 Safeguarding is 3 hour online CPD-accredited course which has not so far been tested by Childrens Quarter participants: we are looking for learners who already have experience and knowledge of Safeguarding to help judge the usefulness and relevance of the course as a refresher qualification. The course aims to give learners an overview of assessment, evaluation, and interventions related to safeguarding and child protection and equip learners so they can recognise and intervene in cases of abuse.  The course is aimed at Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs); school leaders and governors; managers of care services; police officers; social workers and others. Child Sexual Exploitation – is an additional Level 2 online course which aims to give learners an overview of what child sexual exploitation is, signs of child sexual exploitation, prevention, and how to respond to concerns. It is for people who work directly or indirectly with children and young people in the UK, including social workers, teachers and youth workers. See details on Caredemy and book a free place above.

Food Hygiene – courses are available at Level 2 and Level 3 online:

Level 2 Food Hygiene is a 2 hour online CPD-accredited course by Caredemy which has been tested by Childrens Quarter participants and found to be useful and relevant. It meets UK regulations for food handlers and incorporates the latest UK food safety and hygiene training standards.  It is aimed at catering staff but is appropriate for anyone who deals or comes in contact with food.  It covers an overview of food safety and hygiene regulations that outline the preparation and sale of food that is safe to eat. At the end of the course, learners should know about and understand:

  • Food-borne diseases
  • Food legislation
  • Food conservation
  • Temperature management and storage
  • Personal hygiene
  • Hazard analysis (HACCP).

Free online Food Allergy and Intolerance training is available at the government’s Food Standards Agency.

Level 3 Supervising Food Safety is 3 hour online CPD-accredited course which has not so far been tested by Childrens Quarter participants: we are looking for learners who already have a level 2 Food Safety certificate and who are responsible for managing food provision to children and young people to help judge the usefulness and relevance of the course. It aim to give learners an overview of food safety and legislation, microbiological hazards, preventing contamination, food safety management systems, and the supervisor’s role in food safety.  The course is aimed at food business owners, people responsible for supervising food preparation, handling and storage, chefs and kitchen managers, educators and food safety trainers, event organisers and others. At the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • Define terms related to food safety
  • Describe the economic impact of poor food safety practices
  • Identify those most at-risk for food-borne illness
  • Describe current food safety legislation.

  • Nutrition and Healthy Eating – aims to give an overview of basic information and guidance about eating a healthy, balanced diet.  The course is for people who work in health and social care, teachers and school staff, early years practitioners and health and fitness staff. Caredemy courses are generally aimed at people working in health and social care, but are not specifically aimed at staff and volunteers working with children and young people unless stated.
