Shining Stars is a parent-led group set up in 2017 to provide services to SEND children and their families that are part Birmingham’s Chinese community. It is based at, and is supported by, the Chinese Community Centre in Birmingham which is located in Digbeth and is a recognised centre for services, socialising and meeting amongst the community. This summer, Shining Stars will offer ten sessions on Tuesday and Fridays across the school holidays for families with disabled children from ethnic Chinese community.
Shining Stars includes children with a range of learning disabilities, some visual impairment and hearing impairment and many with ASC and ADHD. Parents/carers attend these sessions with their childre, including siblings.
Activities
Activities planned by the group include:
- outdoor facilitated activities at Ackers Adventure centre,
- indoor trampolining,
- games and animal exeriences
- horseriding
- hiking
- physical games
- arts and crafts
- exploration and treasure trails
- gardening and growing.
Activity will be delivered so that children and their siblings can have facilitated fun in in stimulating environment with the safety of their parents who can also socialise with each other.
Food
Level 2 trained volunteers will provide picnic luncheswith support from the Chinese community centre kitchen team and Change Kitchen . Shining Stars try to incorporate new elements and new ways of presenting food items every day. Eating out of doors is a new and enjoyable experience for some of our children and if they want to make a mess and play with new food that is OK.
