More details about what Fit for All is and does
Fit for All is a Children’s Quarter campaign for children and young people to have equal and inclusive access to play, sport and leisure opportunities. This Summer 2022, we’re running holiday adventure programmes that prioritise disabled and vulnerable children who are eligible for free school meals in Birmingham. In August and December 2021, and at Easter 2022, we ran a similar programme. Fit for All is part of the Bring it On Brum initiative. It is part-funded by the government’s Holiday Activities and Food fund.
Rise and Shine with Fit for All – Summer 22
After a successful programme during Easter, we’re running Fit for All to run during the Summer 2022 and at Christmas too. Check out:

‘What We Did Last Summer…’ Fit for All in 2021
Children’s Quarter members including schools, community groups, charities and parent-led bodies are united in wanting to see disabled and vulnerable children, young people and their families included and welcomed by all services; public and private. In 2020, we started a Campaign for Inclusive Holiday Activities – to make sure that children with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and other vulnerable children are properly catered for in government-funded holiday activities and food initiatives.
In Summer 2021 You can see a map showing the groups that were involved in delivering Fit for All last year by looking at the Fit for All Summer 2021 Evaluation. There is no such thing as a standard Fit for All session – the groups that organise the sessions choose times and places and session durations, activities and meal plans that suit the children and families they work with. But the information under each of the headings below give some idea of what you might expect.
By the way, if you are interested in helping to provide sessions or want to volunteer or donate to Fit for All, then here are the links:
Information if you are interested in becoming a provider – we can support parents’ groups and others to do this.
Email Children’s Quarter if you would like to volunteer for or donate money, material or the use of premises to benefit disabled and vulnerable children.
Opportunities for adventure
The Fit For All holiday programme provides inclusive school holiday adventures – with meals provided – prioritising disabled and vulnerable children in Birmingham; and it’s free for children who are eligible for free school meals.
Opportunities on offer can include: inclusive play and youth work, drama, horticulture and adventure play. And there are extras on offer across the programme including: archery; arts and crafts; Bhangra; bushcraft; camping; circus skills; climbing and abseiling; dance therapy; drama; felting; football; Forest School; therapeutic gardening and growing; hula hooping; music; orienteering; painting and drawing; pottery; sensory bubble sessions; singing; T’ai Chi; tobogganing; tubing; and yoga.
Healthy Meals
All Fit For All sessions include a free meal (eg breakfast, lunch or tea) – or two meals at longer sessions. Meals are:
- free for children who are eligible for free school meals;
- prepared and served by staff with food hygiene qualifications and training in food allergies
- made with particular respect to idiosyncratic food choices of individual children.
Children and groups are supported by a visiting chef who helps to make healthy menus and involve children in food preparation and learning more about eating for fitness and health. We know food and eating can be a big issue for a lot of disabled and vulnerable children and this area of work is one we are hoping will be expanded in Fit for All in future.
Enrichment Extras
Children’s Quarter member groups that create opportunities through Fit For All also get opportunities to work with Creative Active Lives CIC and others to add more to the adventure. Creative Active Lives is a non-profit group bringing together skilled practitioners to provide sessions and activity kits centring around, for example: developing life skills; motor skills; promoting relaxation and wellbeing; personal development; encouraging social interaction, physical activity, and mental stimulation; and improving physical wellbeing and mental health.
