Resources for Autism in the West Midlands is running Fit for All playschemes at two schools during the Easter holidays offering young people opportunities to engage in meaningful and fun based activities, including: cooking, sports, and group games, outdoor play, arts and crafts, sensory and water play, trips out etc. This Easter, the group is delivering playschemes at The Pines School in North Birmingham and James Brindley School in South Birmingham:

The inclusion criteria for RfA’s sessions is: a young person (5-18 years) with an autism diagnosis (5-18 years). Any family with an autistic young person in Birmingham can apply for a place, but they are heavily over-subscribed.
As a specialist autism provider, RfA’s approach is guided by an ethos of acceptance of an individual as they are. The group never turns anyone away due to behaviours which others may find challenging to cope with. They work with the environment around the individual to shift the narrative from one of pathology to one of inclusion and create services that are aware and inclusive of neurodivergence. Most of the individuals supported have complex needs and require 1:1 support ratio; a key worker is allocated to each young person.
The group tries to balance the allocation of spaces at its Fit for All playschemes between families who haven’t accessed its services before; those who don’t currently attend a term time group; and families who may have missed out on previous schemes as well as families who are currently accessing our services. Limited budget and high staff ratios means there are limited spaces at each session.
