Birmingham PHAB Camps is a volunteer-led charity which organises inclusive residential summer camps for disabled and non-disabled children together. This summer, the group is organising 4 week-long camps in Cheshire and the Lake District.
The group raises funds throughout the year to pay for the camps which means anyone aged between 8-16 years can apply for a free place on a camp and anyone can join in the fundraising effort to support them.
This summer’s camps are at The Wingate Centre near Nantwich in Cheshire and at Bendrigg in the Lake District. The camps take place in the first three weeks of the school summer holidays with:
- 1) a venture group of 14-16 year olds visiting Bendrigg in week 1;
- 2) a junior group of 8-10 year olds visiting the Wingate Centre near Nantwich also in week 1;
- 3) a group including children with multiple, complex and sensory needs aged 8-18 years at the Wingate Centre in week 2;
- 4) a group of 11-13 year old children staying at the Wingate Centre in week 3.
The Wingate Centre is an accessible centre for physical activity, drama, arts and crafts run by a children’s trust which is devoted to enriching the lives of children and young people with all levels of physical and learning disability and who are disadvantaged.
Bendrigg Lodge is run by a charitable trust which enables fully accessible activity breaks – ‘adventure for all’ – for disabled young people including climbing, caving, canoeing, zip wires, gorge and fell walking, night hikes and bushcraft.
