All Saints is an inclusive youth project that has been providing leisure and learning opportunities for young people in Kings Heath since 1998. It celebrates the diversity of young people and its staff and volunteers. This summer All Saints is offering twelve days of youth provision for 50 young people aged between 10 and 18 years old including: young people with SEND and or who are vulnerable due to a range of individual needs and children who are eligible for free school meals. ASYP believes in promoting inclusive practice and creating a welcome for ALL young people regardless of their ability or background.
All Saints is popular trusted provision based in the centre of Kings Heath. Many of the young people have been coming to the club for years. There is a general acceptance of difference and a great deal of mutual nurturing amongst young participants. Sessions work with a staff ratio of one adult to five young people – which is manageable because staff have a good knowledge of the young people who are involved. They are able to cater for individual preferences and are aware of their triggers and the challenges they may be facing. Staff are also usually well-informed about any personal disputes and are able to help young people to negotiate and to provide each other with support.
During the Summer, the youth project uses the 150 sqm large hall at the All Saints Centre as well as their own kitchen spaces, a large crafts room, an outdoor area, and the local park. The project has a group of experienced youth practitioners and access to specialist arts and sports practitioners who are able to work with mixed ability groups. The programme will include special themed projects selected by young people.
Activities
There is no rigid timetable: it’s not school at All Saints but there’s lots of learning happening though a self-chosen range of activities including:
- large scale group games
- drama, art, poetry and singing
- dodge ball, volleyball and dance
- quiet space and small group board games etc
- trips chosen by the young people which may be to the nature centre, local farms, adventure, and sports centres for climbing, trampoline or go karting.
Food
Staff encourage young people to think about and choose the menus for the holidays and to try new food items; and try to stimulate excitement around trying new things that break fussy and poor eating habits. Eating together at lunch time with either food provided and prepared on site (including by young people themselves) or brought from home is part of the experience.
